Wayne County, IN – A dangerous intersection in Wayne County is finally getting a long-overdue safety overhaul after nearly 20 years of accidents. The US 27 and Pottershop Road junction has been the site of numerous crashes, including a recent fatal collision that spurred action.

Sheriff Randy Retter reported that over the past five years, the intersection saw 18 crashes, 24 injuries, and one fatality. The majority of incidents occurred when westbound vehicles failed to yield to oncoming traffic on US 27, where speeds often exceed 55 mph. Sheriff Retter emphasized the lasting impact of these collisions on victims and their families, stating, “These crashes have taken a devastating toll on our community.”

To address the dangers, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will install blinking stop signs for eastbound and westbound traffic and add “Intersection Ahead” warning signs on US 27. This project was accelerated through collaboration between local officials, public safety agencies, and Senator Jeff Raatz.

The upgrades are part of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Safe Roads Initiative, which seeks to improve roadway safety across the region. Sheriff Retter encouraged residents to report additional traffic hazards to further enhance the community’s safety.
