Montpelier, VT – Travel across Vermont and the northern Adirondacks of New York is expected to slow significantly Tuesday as steady snowfall moves into the region, creating hazardous road conditions during a busy holiday travel period.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. Tuesday through 7 a.m. Wednesday for much of central, north-central, and northeastern Vermont, as well as the northern Adirondacks of New York. Snowfall totals of 3 to 5 inches are expected across most locations, with up to 8 inches possible at higher elevations and mountain summits.
Affected areas include communities such as Montpelier, Stowe, Newport, St. Johnsbury, Killington, Waitsfield, Randolph, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Derby, Newport, and Island Pond, along with surrounding rural and mountain regions.
Forecasters say the steadiest snowfall and lowest visibility are most likely from mid-afternoon through late tonight, when road conditions could deteriorate quickly. While snowfall rates are not expected to be extreme, prolonged accumulation combined with colder temperatures may lead to snow-covered and slippery roads, especially on untreated surfaces, mountain passes, and secondary highways.
Drivers should expect slow travel conditions this afternoon, evening, and overnight. The advisory extends into early Wednesday morning, meaning lingering impacts could affect early holiday travelers and the Wednesday morning commute in some areas.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time, particularly when traveling through higher terrain.
Road conditions can be checked through NewEngland511.org for Vermont and 511ny.org for New York before heading out.
