Burlington, Vermont – A strong storm system will bring damaging winds, heavy rain, and a quick return to winter conditions across northern New York and Vermont through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Burlington.
A High Wind Warning and Wind Advisories are in effect from 11 p.m. Sunday through 8 p.m. Monday, with south winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 60 mph possible, especially across northern New York along the Route 11 corridor and the northern slopes of the Adirondacks.
Forecasters say the strongest winds are expected between 2 a.m. and noon Monday, which could bring down trees and power lines and cause scattered power outages. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects before the strongest winds arrive.
Rain will move into the region Monday, with periods of heavy rain and even a few thunderstorms possible during the afternoon and evening as temperatures climb into the upper 50s and low 60s.
Behind a cold front Monday night, temperatures will drop rapidly into the teens and 20s, causing rain to quickly change over to snow across the region.
Light snowfall accumulations are expected, generally 1 to 5 inches across the Adirondacks, with lighter totals elsewhere. Lake-effect snow showers may continue into Tuesday afternoon.
As temperatures fall below freezing overnight, black ice could develop on untreated roads and bridges Tuesday morning, creating potentially hazardous travel conditions across parts of northern New York and Vermont.
