Old Forge, NY – A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for Hamilton and Northern Herkimer Counties from 4 p.m. Thursday through 1 a.m. Saturday, as snow bands from Lake Ontario are expected to bring heavy accumulations and reduced visibility to the Adirondacks.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected, with higher totals possible in the most persistent snow bands. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, producing blowing snow and periods of whiteout conditions, especially along and north of Route 28.

The lake effect band is expected to set up Thursday evening, then shift southward overnight into Friday morning, maintaining hazardous travel conditions through much of the Thanksgiving holiday. Additional upslope snow showers will linger through Friday before tapering Friday night.

Forecasters urge residents and travelers to prepare for rapid changes in weather and visibility, as lake effect snow can vary dramatically within short distances. Those traveling in the region should carry emergency supplies, including flashlights, blankets, food, and water, and allow extra time for travel.

Conditions should begin to improve late Friday night into early Saturday as snow bands weaken and winds subside.
