Old Forge, New York – Travel conditions across the Adirondacks are expected to worsen late Tuesday morning as snow spreads into Hamilton and Northern Herkimer counties, setting up multiple rounds of accumulation that could affect key commute periods through midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday until 1 a.m. Thursday for Hamilton and Northern Herkimer counties. Total snowfall between 3 and 5 inches is expected, with impacts stretching from the western Adirondacks into higher-elevation communities.
Snow is expected to begin late Tuesday morning or early Tuesday afternoon as a clipper system moves through, producing a few hours of steady snowfall before a brief lull later in the afternoon. Roads such as Route 28, Route 30, and local Adirondack parkways could become snow-covered during this initial burst. A second, more persistent round of snow is expected to develop late Tuesday afternoon and continue into Wednesday as lake effect snow showers take over.
Communities including Old Forge, Long Lake, Big Moose, Eagle Bay, and Wells are most likely to see the greatest travel impacts, particularly during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution on untreated roads, sidewalks, and driveways.
The advisory remains in effect through early Thursday, and additional updates are possible if lake effect bands intensify or linger longer than expected.
