Albany, NY – A blustery and sharply colder pattern is settling over the Capital Region and surrounding areas, with gusty winds today and freezing temperatures expected tonight and again Friday night, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Albany.

According to forecasters, wind gusts today may reach 20 to 25 mph, especially south of I-90. Lake-effect snow showers will extend into the northern and eastern Catskills and into the spine of the southern Green Mountains this afternoon into early evening. Accumulations will generally range from 1 to 3 inches in the higher elevations, with only flurries expected elsewhere.

Temperatures will fall quickly after sunset. Lows tonight are forecast to dip into the mid-20s across the Capital Region, with upper teens to around 20 degrees across the Adirondacks, including Old Forge and Newcomb. Albany is expected to drop to around 29 degrees, with surrounding communities such as Pittsfield, Glens Falls, Cobleskill, and Bennington falling to the low- to mid-20s.

Friday night brings another round of freezing temperatures, with lows again in the 20–25 degree range for much of eastern New York and western New England. Some Adirondack valleys may slip back into the teens.

These colder nights follow a stretch of windy, unsettled conditions and signal a transition into a more winterlike pattern. No major storm systems are expected through the weekend, but lingering lake-effect snow showers may continue in higher terrain through early Friday.

Residents should plan for hard-freeze conditions tonight and tomorrow night, especially in rural areas and sheltered valleys where temperatures may drop faster.
