Long Lake, New York – Residents and travelers across the western Adirondacks should prepare for deteriorating road conditions tonight as snow spreads into the region, creating a prolonged period of slippery travel that could last through Thursday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday evening for Hamilton and northern Herkimer counties. Snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected, with the most impactful conditions occurring overnight and during the Thursday morning commute.
Communities including Old Forge, Long Lake, Big Moose, Eagle Bay, Wells, Hoffmeister, and McKeever can expect snow-covered roads and reduced traction, especially on untreated surfaces. As the initial system moves through tonight, colder air will allow snow to accumulate efficiently, leading to slick conditions on area highways and local roads.
Additional lake effect snow bands may develop off Lake Ontario late tonight into Thursday morning, particularly impacting northern Herkimer County. These bands could cause localized bursts of heavier snow, briefly reducing visibility and making travel more difficult in spots.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Pedestrians should also use caution on icy sidewalks, stairs, and driveways. The advisory remains in effect through Thursday evening, and additional updates may be issued if lake effect snow becomes more persistent.
