Addison, IL – The Addison Police Department is cautioning residents about a rise in “Governmental agency scams,” especially as tax season gets underway. These scams often start with a call, text, email, or social media message from someone claiming to be from a government agency.
According to the department, scammers may pose as representatives of agencies like the IRS, Social Security Administration, FTC, or even Medicare. They may try to sound official by providing an “employee ID number” or other information, but they will often ask for money or personal information, claiming an urgent need for it.
“Scammers may also use fake names of agencies, such as the non-existent ‘National Sweepstakes Bureau,’ and they will pressure you to send money immediately,” said a spokesperson from the department. “Government agencies will never ask for money or personal information via these methods.”
The Addison Police offered several tips on how to avoid falling victim to these scams:
- Don’t wire money or use gift cards or payment apps to send money to someone claiming to be from a government agency.
- Don’t give out personal information to anyone who contacts you via call, text, or email. If you’re unsure, hang up and contact the agency directly using a verified phone number.
- Don’t trust caller IDs. Scammers can fake caller ID information to appear legitimate.
- Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails, texts, or social media messages that claim to be from government agencies.
If you receive such a message, experts advise deleting it immediately and not engaging further.
