Addison, IL – An Addison man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he was allegedly driving under the influence with a 22-month-old child in the back seat while already on probation for a prior DUI offense.
According to the DuPage County Stateโs Attorneyโs Office, the incident happened Sunday at approximately 9:46 p.m. when Elmhurst police responded to a disturbance involving a woman reportedly striking the window of a dark-colored SUV near Schiller Street and Hampshire Drive. Officers allegedly located a vehicle matching the description and observed it having difficulty maintaining its lane and veering into oncoming traffic.
Police identified the driver as 24-year-old Alexis Lara of Addison. Authorities allege Lara exhibited signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of alcohol. A 22-month-old child was also inside the vehicle. After conducting field sobriety tests, officers took Lara into custody. A subsequent breath test allegedly showed a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit.
Prosecutors say Lara has been charged with four counts of aggravated DUI, along with multiple misdemeanors and traffic violations, including allegedly endangering the health and life of a child. Officials also state Lara was on probation for a previous aggravated DUI conviction at the time of the arrest.
DuPage County Stateโs Attorney Robert Berlin emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, stating that impaired driving continues to pose a significant threat to public safety, especially when children are involved. Elmhurst Police Chief Michael McLean credited officers with intervening before the situation allegedly resulted in more severe consequences.
Lara appeared in First Appearance Court, where a judge denied pre-trial release. His next court date is scheduled for April 27.
Authorities remind the public that all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
