Billings, MT – The National Weather Service in Billings has upgraded its alert to a Winter Storm Warning for the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains, including the Cooke City area. The warning is in effect from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday, with potentially dangerous conditions expected across the high country.
According to the NWS, total snow accumulations between 1 and 2 feet are likely, with the heaviest snow expected on west-facing slopes. Winds could gust up to 70 mph, creating severe blowing snow and whiteout conditions across exposed ridges and passes.
Officials warn that recreation and travel in mountain areas will be significantly impacted. Backcountry users, snowmobilers, and anyone traveling near mountain passes should use extreme caution and prepare for rapidly changing weather.
Forecasters also note that additional rounds of heavy snow may develop later this week, extending hazardous conditions through Thursday and Friday.
Residents and visitors are urged to monitor local forecasts and avoid unnecessary high-elevation travel until the storm subsides.
