San Angelo, Texas – Large hail and damaging winds could hit West Central Texas on Thursday afternoon as strong storms threaten cities from Abilene to Sweetwater.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms exists across the Big Country on May 22. The greatest threat appears to be in the northern counties, with storms potentially developing along the dryline during the late afternoon and evening hours. Additional cells could push farther south later in the day.
The main hazards include large hail and gusts strong enough to damage roofs, trees, and power lines. While the tornado risk remains low, it is not zero. The timing and southern extent of the storms will depend on how conditions evolve along the dryline Thursday.
Residents in Abilene, Sweetwater, Haskell, and surrounding areas should remain weather-aware and monitor local updates. Emergency kits, fully charged devices, and alternate shelter plans are recommended in case warnings are issued.
Storm season remains active through the end of May in Texas. More updates are expected within the next 24–48 hours as confidence in storm timing and severity increases.
