Abilene, TX – Strong thunderstorms are sweeping across the Big Country Monday afternoon, bringing damaging winds, small hail, and heavy downpours that could cause flash flooding in some neighborhoods. Gusts topping 50 mph have already been reported, with the strongest cells capable of snapping tree limbs and toppling fences.

According to the National Weather Service in Abilene and San Angelo, showers and storms will persist through at least 4 p.m. across the region. Rainfall totals may exceed 1 inch in localized areas, raising the risk of street flooding and hazardous conditions at low-water crossings. Forecasters also warned that a few of these storms could briefly reach severe levels.

Communities including Sweetwater, Stamford, Merkel, and Abilene are directly in the storm line, while additional strong storms are expected to develop farther south into the northern Concho Valley near Sterling City and Robert Lee later this evening.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and be prepared for sudden gusts that may make travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Residents should secure outdoor items and remain alert to additional warnings that may be issued.

Storm chances will linger into tonight, with the potential for more rounds of thunderstorms through midweek.
