Abilene, Texas – A rapid temperature swing will push West Central Texas from mild 70s Monday to near-record heat by Thursday, before a cold front drops highs by more than 30 degrees heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, highs will surge into the mid to upper 90s by Wednesday and Thursday, with Abilene reaching 96°F and Haskell peaking near 97°F. This warming trend follows a cooler start Monday, where north to northeast winds at 10 to 15 mph keep highs in the 70s to low 80s.

Cities across the Big Country—including San Angelo, Brownwood, and Sweetwater—will climb into the mid-90s by midweek, raising the risk of heat-related strain for outdoor workers and early-season energy demand. Overnight lows will also rise into the 60s, limiting nighttime cooling.

By Friday afternoon, a cold front will push through the region, dropping Abilene to around 78°F and sending weekend highs into the mid-60s. Roads remain dry, but shifting winds and rapid temperature changes could impact travel and outdoor plans.

Residents should hydrate, limit strenuous afternoon activity midweek, and prepare for cooler conditions by Friday night. Additional updates may follow as the late-week front approaches.
