Abilene, Texas – Hot, dry air and strong winds are creating a fast-moving fire risk across West Texas today, with gusts reaching 40 mph and humidity dropping as low as 20 percent by mid-afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, near-critical fire weather conditions are developing across a large portion of the region, especially along and north of the I-20 corridor, including Abilene, Sweetwater, and Rotan. South winds are increasing to 15 to 30 mph, with peak gusts expected before sunset.

Temperatures are climbing into the low to mid-90s, with Abilene near 93°F and San Angelo reaching 94°F. Surrounding communities including Ballinger, Coleman, and Brownwood are also seeing highs between 89°F and 92°F, adding to rapid drying of grasses and brush.

The combination of heat, wind, and low humidity means any spark could spread quickly. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay activities that could produce sparks. Drivers along I-20 and US-87 should remain alert for reduced visibility if fires develop.

Conditions will remain elevated through the evening hours, and additional advisories may be issued if winds persist or humidity drops further.
