Abilene, Texas – Rain chances of 70% to 90% are expected to return Friday into Saturday across West Central Texas, potentially impacting travel along Interstate 20 and U.S. Highway 83.
According to the National Weather Service in Abilene/San Angelo, an approaching upper-level disturbance and associated cold front will bring another round of showers and thunderstorms to the region beginning Friday and continuing into Saturday.
Forecasters say overall rainfall totals are expected to range between one-quarter inch and one inch, with isolated areas possibly receiving higher localized amounts. While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, a few storms could become strong to severe.
Rain probabilities increase significantly Friday afternoon and evening for Abilene, Sweetwater, San Angelo, and surrounding communities. Storm chances remain elevated into early Saturday before gradually tapering.
Temperatures will trend slightly cooler ahead of the front before a brief warm-up late in the workweek. Highs are expected to reach the upper 70s to low 80s Thursday before settling back into the upper 60s to mid 70s this weekend. Overnight lows will range from the upper 40s to upper 50s.
Drivers along I-20, U.S. 277, and U.S. 83 should monitor updated forecasts as rainfall could reduce visibility and create slick roadway conditions during peak travel periods Friday evening.
Students and commuters heading home late Friday may encounter wet roads if storms develop during the evening hours.
The National Weather Service says exact rainfall totals and any potential for isolated severe storms will become clearer as the system approaches.
