Abilene, Texas – Drivers along Interstate 20 and Winters Freeway could face sudden downpours, hail-covered lanes and wind gusts strong enough to push high-profile vehicles off course beginning Thursday afternoon, with repeated storm rounds expected through Saturday night.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, multiple rounds of thunderstorms will develop across West Central Texas starting Thursday and continuing Friday and Saturday. Forecasters say some storms could turn severe, producing large hail, wind gusts up to 60 mph and isolated tornadoes. The highest risk currently includes Taylor County and surrounding communities along the I-20 corridor, including Merkel, Tye and areas stretching toward Sweetwater.

Storm timing will likely favor late afternoon and evening hours each day, increasing the threat during peak travel periods. Heavy rainfall could also trigger brief street flooding, especially in low-lying areas near Cedar Creek and sections of Loop 322. Rural roadways outside Abilene may become slick quickly as storms intensify.

Residents should secure outdoor furniture, park vehicles in covered areas to prevent hail damage and ensure phones are fully charged in case of power outages. Those traveling on US-83, US-84 and US-277 should monitor conditions closely and avoid driving into water-covered roads. If a warning is issued, move indoors immediately and stay away from windows.

Additional updates are expected as confidence increases in storm timing and intensity. Watches or warnings may be issued with little lead time, especially late in the week. The severe weather threat remains in place through Saturday night across the Abilene region.
