ABILENE, Texas – Drivers in the Big Country should be alert tonight as thunderstorms bring a marginal flash flood risk, especially in northern areas. The National Weather Service warns heavy rain may lead to localized flooding in low-lying spots and roadways, particularly during the late-night and early morning hours.

According to the US National Weather Service in San Angelo, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected tonight, with a 5 to 15 percent chance of flash flooding. The greatest risk lies in the northern Big Country, where saturated ground and poor drainage could lead to rapid water buildup.

Motorists are urged to avoid driving across flooded roadways, as water depth can be deceptive and dangerous. Low-water crossings, rural back roads, and urban underpasses are the most vulnerable to flooding. Emergency officials recommend delaying non-essential travel and keeping a flashlight and charged phone on hand in case of power outages.

The rain threat is expected to diminish by early Tuesday morning, but additional storms remain possible later this week as moisture continues to stream into the region.
