Abilene, Texas – West Texas is on high alert as dangerous heat grips the region, with highs near 104°F expected across the Big Country and Concho Valley by Thursday and Friday. Residents in Abilene, San Angelo, Ballinger, Sweetwater, and surrounding towns are urged to take heat precautions, as excessive warmth lingers through the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Abilene/San Angelo, temperatures will steadily climb the rest of the week, with triple-digit highs likely each afternoon. Minimum overnight temperatures will provide little relief, only dropping into the mid-70s. While no official heat advisories are posted yet, the NWS warns that advisories may be needed by late week, especially for areas like Brownwood, Coleman, and Sweetwater.
On Friday, the heat risk will be highest for those spending extended time outdoors or lacking air conditioning. Local officials recommend hydrating often, wearing light clothing, and checking on elderly neighbors or pets. Some school and outdoor activities may be postponed if conditions worsen.
Though a slight 20% chance of rain lingers for Crockett County on Wednesday, the broader region should prepare for dry and hot conditions similar to last July’s heat wave. The Big Country and Concho Valley could experience the summer’s hottest stretch so far.
Hot, dry weather is expected to continue into the weekend, with more advisories possible. Stay tuned for updates and further alerts from the National Weather Service.
