Aberdeen, SD – Persistent snow and areas of blowing snow will continue to impact northeast South Dakota tonight, keeping roads slick and visibility reduced across Brown, McPherson, Spink, Clark, and nearby counties through Saturday midday.
According to the National Weather Service Aberdeen office, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon Saturday for a broad stretch of central and northeast South Dakota and adjacent west central Minnesota, including Stanley, Hughes, Jones, Lyman, Buffalo, Campbell, McPherson, Brown, Spink, Clark, Codington, Hamlin, Marshall, Roberts, Grant, and Deuel counties. Most areas will pick up an additional 2 to 5 inches of snow, with winds gusting to 30 mph creating patchy blowing snow west of the James River.
According to South Dakota DOT, compact snow and icy patches are widespread along US-12 through Aberdeen, SD-37 near Redfield, and US-83 around Pierre. Evening refreezing is worsening conditions on bridges and elevated surfaces. Drivers should slow down, keep headlights on, and plan extra time for rural travel. Minnesota travelers across Big Stone and Grant counties should check 511mn.org for updates before heading toward Ortonville or Sisseton.
According to emergency managers in Brown and Spink counties, blowing snow may briefly drop visibility on open stretches, particularly north and west of Aberdeen where winds funnel across harvested fields. Residents are encouraged to charge devices, keep winter kits in their vehicles, and delay non-essential trips until plow crews can catch up Saturday morning.
Snow will gradually diminish late Saturday morning, but temperatures stay cold enough for lingering slick spots into early afternoon.
