Aberdeen, SD – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for much of northeast South Dakota and portions of western Minnesota, with forecasters warning of 2–7 inches of snow and strong winds up to 45 mph creating dangerous travel conditions through Tuesday and early Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen.

Snow will begin before sunrise Tuesday across north-central South Dakota, spreading east through Aberdeen, Britton, Sisseton, Wheaton, and Ortonville by mid-morning. The heaviest snow is expected across Marshall and Roberts counties, where totals could approach 7 inches.

Travel will become hazardous throughout the day as gusty northwest winds lead to blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to near zero at times. Roads are likely to become slick and snow-covered, especially during the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.

Motorists are urged to delay nonessential travel, slow down, and check 511 road updates before heading out. Even light snow combined with strong winds can cause whiteout conditions on open highways.
