Indianapolis, IN — The National Weather Service in Indianapolis is warning residents across central Indiana to prepare for bitterly cold conditions this weekend as arctic air surges into the region. Wind chills are expected to dip well below zero Sunday and Monday mornings, marking the coldest temperatures of the season so far.
Forecasters say air temperatures will drop into the single digits by early Sunday, with wind chills between -5°F and 5°F across much of central and southern Indiana. Strong northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph will combine with the frigid air, creating potentially hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors.
“The combination of cold air and gusty winds will push wind chills below zero,” meteorologists said. “Exposure without proper protection could result in frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes.”
Cities including Indianapolis, Bloomington, Lafayette, Terre Haute, and Muncie are all expected to experience similar cold extremes. The NWS advises residents to wear multiple layers, limit outdoor exposure, and check on elderly neighbors or those without adequate heating.
Drivers should ensure their vehicles are winterized, keep emergency kits on hand, and be cautious of black ice as temperatures remain below freezing. Pets should be brought indoors, and outdoor livestock should have access to shelter and unfrozen water.
The cold pattern is expected to linger into early next week, with highs only in the 20s to low 30s and lows in the single digits.
