Channahon, IL – A powerful EF-2 tornado tore through Illinois on Monday night, leaving a 28.9-mile path of destruction from Channahon to Matteson. The tornado, which struck between 9:17 p.m. and 9:40 p.m., featured peak winds of 120 mph and a maximum width of 200 yards.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago, the tornado caused significant damage across Will and Cook Counties, uprooting trees, damaging buildings, and downing power lines. The NWS’s storm survey revealed the tornado’s path length and its intensity as it moved northeast through Manhattan and Frankfort before dissipating near Matteson.
Authorities reported one injury but no fatalities. Emergency responders quickly attended to the injured individual, who is expected to recover. Local officials are now assessing the full extent of the damage and coordinating cleanup efforts.
