According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 12:55 a.m. local time, about 6 kilometers west of Mammoth Lakes. The earthquake was shallow, with a depth of only 0.8 kilometers, amplifying its surface impact.
Residents reported mild shaking but no significant damage or injuries have been confirmed. The USGS ShakeMap registered the intensity as level IV, meaning the quake was felt by many but caused minimal disruption.
