Morehead City, NC – The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially ended November 30, closing out a near-average year with 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes, according to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City. Despite several powerful systems forming in the Atlantic, no hurricanes made direct U.S. landfall this season.

Among the most notable storms was Hurricane Erin, which remained several hundred miles off the East Coast but still generated strong surf, rip currents, and gusty coastal winds across eastern North Carolina. Other systems, including Hurricanes Humberto and Lorenzo, tracked primarily over open ocean waters.

The season began early with Tropical Storm Andrea forming in late May and ended with Hurricane Melissa in late October. NOAA’s season summary map shows widespread storm activity across the central and western Atlantic, with the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico experiencing relatively quiet conditions compared to recent years.

Forecasters note that, while landfall activity was limited, the season served as a reminder of the importance of early preparation. The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1, 2026.
