Oswego, IL – A tragic update has been released following Tuesday’s vehicle-into-building crash at a Portillo’s restaurant in Oswego, confirming that a 2-year-old boy has died and 14 others were injured in the incident.

According to the Village of Oswego Police Department, officers responded at approximately 1:55 p.m. to the Portillo’s located at 2810 Route 34, where a vehicle crashed through the restaurant’s front entrance. Authorities now confirm that the toddler died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Police said eight individuals, including the driver, were transported to area hospitals. Six additional people were treated on scene and released. Investigators are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, which initial findings suggest may have been accidental.

Chief Jason Bastin addressed the community during a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, calling the event deeply emotional and offering condolences to the child’s family on behalf of first responders. “We ask that their privacy be respected as they grieve this unimaginable loss,” Bastin said.

While the investigation remains in its early stages, officials are reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements to determine the precise cause. A large emergency response was deployed at the scene, and support services are being offered to affected individuals and families.

Victim assistance teams are actively working with those impacted. Police noted that an updated official release will be issued once further details are confirmed.

Residents are still advised to avoid the area around the restaurant as investigators continue their work.
