Chicago, IL – The US National Weather Service confirmed that 17 tornadoes have struck northern Illinois and northwest Indiana over the past two days. Four additional tornadoes were verified from last night’s storms.
According to the National Weather Service, these tornadoes included the Cedar Lake to Crown Point tornado in Lake County, IN, and the Chicago Lawn to West Englewood tornado in Chicago.
The Cedar Lake tornado was rated an EF-1, with peak winds of 90 mph, a path length of 4.7 miles, and a maximum width of 300 yards. The Chicago tornado also rated EF-1, with winds of 90 mph, a path length of 3.2 miles, and a maximum width of 150 yards.
The Weather Service noted that over a dozen locations still need to be surveyed and analyzed, so complete damage assessments will take several more days. Communities across the region are now dealing with the aftermath, including property damage and power outages.
