Wilmington, IL – In a dramatic overnight operation, the Wilmington Fire Protection District (FPD) successfully rescued 14 people trapped due to sudden flooding in downtown Wilmington. According to officials, the emergency, which unfolded around 11:00 PM, was triggered by ice jams breaking free on the Kankakee River, causing a significant change in the river’s course.
The resulting flash flood rapidly inundated the downtown area, leaving multiple residents stranded in homes and businesses. A Box Alarm was raised, leading to the activation of the MABAS 15 Water Rescue Team. This coordinated effort proved critical in navigating the challenging conditions and ensuring the safety of those affected.
The area around Baltimore St (IL Route 53) and Water St, where the flooding was most severe, has been completely shut down to manage the crisis and facilitate rescue operations. The Wilmington FPD and supporting teams worked tirelessly throughout the night, highlighting their readiness and efficiency in responding to such unexpected and dangerous situations. The community is reminded to heed evacuation warnings and stay clear of the affected areas for their safety.
