Omaha, NE – Severe thunderstorms are anticipated to move into the Omaha area today, with the strongest storms expected this afternoon and continuing into the night.
According to the US National Weather Service Omaha/Valley Nebraska, the storms will be slow-moving and capable of producing heavy rainfall, which could result in localized flooding, particularly in eastern Nebraska. The greatest threat window is between 2 PM and 10 PM, with a 50-80% chance of thunderstorms and a 5-10% chance of any individual storm being severe.
Residents are advised to stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. The National Weather Service highlighted the potential for hail up to 1 inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. There is also a possibility of brief tornadoes forming within the storm system.
The heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas and places with poor drainage. The weather service advises residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to seek higher ground if necessary. Outdoor events should be closely monitored, and plans should be adjusted accordingly to ensure safety.
