CHESTERTON, IN — A brief two-second distraction led to a trail of destruction on Wabash Ave. Monday afternoon.

According to Chesterton Police, a Porter resident, 22, glanced away from the road for a mere ‘two seconds’ before meeting dire consequences, striking another vehicle and crashing into a NIPSCO pole and a fire hydrant Tuesday. Police report that the other driver, aged 71, attempted to avoid the crash but was unsuccessful.

Remarkably, neither driver required medical care at the scene. Live wires from the damaged pole draped over an uninvolved truck, resolved by power crews cutting power to afflicted area. The roadway was cleared by 1:48 p.m. after a swift response from local firefighters.
