NEWTON COUNTY – Darkness enveloped more than just the roads last night on County Road 600 E, just north of County Road 900 N.
Witnesses relayed a harrowing account to Newton County Sheriff’s deputies: a 19-year-old in a Mercedes, driving at high speeds without headlights, while attempting to pass two vehicles in the southbound lane, made a split-second maneuver to avoid a head-on collision.
The driver collided with two mailboxes and the car spiraled into a rollover. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are holding back his identity until his family can be notified.
