Highland, IN – The Highland Police Department’s participation in the National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27, 2024, saw an impressive turnout with over 200 pounds of unwanted and expired medications collected.

This semi-annual event, part of a nationwide effort, encourages residents to safely dispose of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. During the four-hour event, a total of 217 pounds of medications were handed over by citizens.

According to the Highland Police Department, this event contributed to a six-month total of 477 pounds of drugs collected for proper disposal, all of which have been turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The department continues to offer a year-round disposal option in the police station lobby, available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, excluding major holidays, to prevent improper disposal methods such as trashing or flushing medications.
