Indianapolis, IN – Hoosiers and visitors alike can explore Indiana’s natural landscapes at no cost this weekend as the state opens its parks for a special free admission day.
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, entrance fees will be waived at all Indiana State Parks on Sunday, encouraging residents to take advantage of spring weather and outdoor recreation opportunities. The annual initiative aims to increase access to public lands while promoting conservation awareness and healthy outdoor activity.
The department said properties that typically charge gate fees will allow free entry for the day, offering visitors a chance to hike, picnic, camp, and enjoy scenic views without the usual cost. Popular destinations such as Brown County State Park, Turkey Run State Park, and Indiana Dunes State Park are expected to see increased attendance.
Officials recommend visitors plan ahead, arrive early, and follow posted guidelines to help manage crowds and protect natural resources. Parking areas may fill quickly at high-traffic locations, and some facilities or programs could have limited availability due to demand.
The DNR also encourages guests to practice responsible recreation, including staying on designated trails, properly disposing of trash, and respecting wildlife habitats. Safety reminders include checking weather conditions, bringing water, and informing others of travel plans when venturing into more remote areas.
Free admission days are part of broader efforts to connect communities with Indiana’s public lands, highlighting the state’s diverse ecosystems and recreational opportunities. Additional events and programming may be scheduled throughout the summer season.
