Joliet, Illinois – A new summer-long challenge is inviting residents and travelers to explore historic Route 66 as it winds through Will County, blending outdoor recreation with local history.
According to the Forest Preserve District of Will County, the “Get Your Kicks Challenge” begins Thursday and runs through July 31, encouraging participants to complete missions using the free Goosechase app. Activities include visiting forest preserves, snapping photos, answering trivia, and checking in at well-known landmarks along the iconic highway.
Route 66 cuts across Will County from the northern border near Interstate 55, through Joliet, and down toward Wilmington, connecting a mix of natural areas and historic destinations. The challenge highlights locations such as Prairie Bluff Preserve in Crest Hill, downtown Lockport, Joliet Iron Works Historic Site, and Wilmington-area attractions like the Gemini Giant and Forked Creek Preserve.
Organizers say the program is designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Route 66 while encouraging people to engage with the region’s cultural and environmental assets. Partnerships include local municipalities and institutions such as the Illinois Rock & Roll Museum and Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.
The initiative also ties into Will County’s broader transportation history. Sites featured in the challenge reflect earlier eras, from the French fur trade to industrial rail systems and canal transport along the I&M Canal.
Officials say the goal is to connect people with both the past and present of the “Mother Road,” offering a mix of education, recreation, and community engagement throughout the summer months.
Participants can find details and register through the Forest Preserve District’s website.
