BRAIDWOOD, IL – A severe crash occurred on Interstate 55 near mile marker 232 late on New Year’s Day.

According to authorities the collision was a result of a vehicle being struck by a red minivan, which then fled the scene. The Illinois State Police are now conducting a search for the hit-and-run driver, with the minivan expected to have notable front-end damage. The crash shut down the north bound lanes for a time and led to one victim suffering a leg amputation. Tragically, two others are in critical condition.

Helicopters were unable to assist due to adverse flying conditions. The northbound lanes of I-55 were closed for investigation and emergency response. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information on the incident and the whereabouts of the red minivan. More details will be provided as the investigation progresses.
