Watseka, IL – Fed up with “dumpster divers” treating trash bins like all-you-can-eat buffets, Watseka officials have decided to lock things down—literally.

On Tuesday night, the City Council voted 5-1 to require business owners to secure their dumpsters with locks, which the city will kindly pay for. According to city officials, fines will be dished out in Municipal Court for those who fail to comply, but most fines will be waived if businesses show they’re trying to keep their trash secure.

The new ordinance aims to alleviate a reported headache for both business owners and city officials by cracking down on unsecured dumpsters. Businesses will need to secure the locking devices, but the city will foot the bill with a little help from the garbage collector.

The initiative, which takes effect next month, highlights the city’s commitment to cleanliness and cooperation, ensuring Watseka remains a tidy community for all its residents.
