Chicago, IL – A Chicago police officer was shot and killed Saturday morning in a violent encounter involving a robbery suspect inside a local hospital, marking a devastating loss for the department and community.
According to Chicago police, the incident happened around 10:50 a.m. Saturday at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital. Officer John Bartholomew, 38, was allegedly shot and killed while assisting in the transport and supervision of a suspect who had allegedly been involved in a robbery earlier that morning.
Authorities said that around 9:00 a.m., Officer Bartholomew and another officer transported the suspect, who was allegedly accused of robbing a Family Dollar store, to the hospital for observation. Nearly two hours later, the suspect allegedly obtained a firearm under unclear circumstances and allegedly opened fire, striking both officers.
Both officers were transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment. Officer Bartholomew was later pronounced dead Saturday afternoon. The second officer sustained severe injuries and remained hospitalized.
Police said the suspect allegedly fled the scene immediately after the shooting but was apprehended shortly afterward and taken into custody. Officials have not yet released details on how the suspect allegedly accessed the weapon inside the hospital.
Officer Bartholomew had served with the Chicago Police Department for 10 years and was assigned to the Albany Park District. Colleagues described him as a dedicated officer committed to public safety.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full sequence of events and how the situation escalated. Officials indicated additional charges are expected as the case develops.
The shooting underscores ongoing concerns about officer safety and procedures when handling suspects in medical settings.
