Kankakee, IL – As enthusiasts worldwide celebrate World UFO Day, Kankakee County residents reflect on a peculiar event from April 1897, when strange lights reportedly traversed the skies. These sightings, recorded in Chicago newspapers, captivated the region, including Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas.

Multiple doctors at the state mental hospital in Kankakee, including Dr. Walker and Dr. Schier, observed the lights on April 8, 1897. A Police Chief noted the light appeared as a bright star or headlight, moving with surprising speed and vanishing in the northwest. The Kankakee Gazette chronicled these phenomena, including an officer’s vivid description of an airship, which he attributed to his imagination after a drink.

A week later, a Kankakee Gazette reporter described a glorious light north of Court Street, radiant and colorful, moving across the sky and vanishing. Witnesses, including multiple people, watched in awe as a red light appeared, swinging and disappearing within minutes. The Ottawa Republican-Times reported similar sightings across Illinois and Indiana, totaling 110 that week.

These airship sightings, occurring over several weeks.
