Illinois records nearly 10,000 cases in a single-day, 10,000 deaths in pandemic

SPRINGFIELD – The State of Illinois set two unwanted benchmarks Thursday, with a record number of cases on the day and a dreadful death record.

Thursday, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced 9,935 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the state, including 97 deaths.  The new deaths made death totals since the pandemic began roll over the 10,000 mark.

There have now been 10,030 deaths in the pandemic statewide. Among newly reported deaths announced Thursday by IDPH included individuals from 33 different counties statewide, including people from Cook, Kankakee, Vermilion, and Will counties.

Since the pandemic began, 447,491 cases have been announced in Illinois. 

The current statewide rolling seven-day positivity sits at 9.1%.
