Sacramento, California – While much of the central and eastern United States prepares for increasing heat and humidity, much of the West Coast is expected to remain noticeably cooler than average through early July.

According to long-range National Weather Service outlooks, below-normal temperatures are favored across large portions of California, Oregon, Washington and parts of the Great Basin as a persistent trough remains established over the western United States.

The cooler pattern is expected to keep temperatures closer to seasonal averages and, in some locations, several degrees below normal. Coastal communities from San Diego to Seattle are likely to experience continued marine influence, helping suppress extreme heat.

The contrast between the West and the rest of the nation will become increasingly pronounced as a strengthening ridge pushes temperatures well above average across the Plains, Midwest, Ohio Valley and East Coast.

While occasional periods of warmer weather are still possible inland, forecasters currently expect the overall cooler trend to dominate much of the West through the beginning of July. Residents can expect more comfortable conditions compared to the widespread heat anticipated east of the Rockies.
