Missouri Weather Tonight: Storms Increase, Some Could Turn Severe

Springfield, MO – Residents across southwest and central Missouri could see thunderstorms increase from north to south tonight and into Thursday, with a few storms potentially becoming strong to severe.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, scattered showers and thunderstorms remain possible this afternoon, with rain chances increasing tonight. Forecasters said the primary hazards from any isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are damaging wind gusts, large hail, brief heavy downpours and lightning.

The Springfield forecast office placed much of its coverage area under a marginal, Level 1 of 5, severe weather risk Wednesday. The outlook includes communities around Springfield, Joplin, Lebanon, Osage Beach, Rolla and surrounding areas.

Rain could also provide some relief from ongoing dry conditions. The Weather Service said most locations may receive between 0.50 and 1 inch of rainfall, while locally heavier amounts of 1 to 5 inches cannot be ruled out.

Thursday currently carries the highest widespread rain chances in the agency's four-day outlook, ranging from 60% to 90% across the region. High temperatures are expected to range from about 76 to 92 degrees.

Daily rain chances continue into the weekend, though probabilities generally decrease after Thursday. Friday carries roughly 15% to 45% chances, followed by 30% to 60% Saturday and 15% to 25% Sunday, depending on location.

Temperatures are expected to remain cooler late this week before climbing again this weekend, with some locations potentially reaching the mid-90s Sunday.
