Urbana, IL – Urbana residents and community organizations are invited to a grand opening Thursday for a new police office designed to strengthen community connections and provide access to resources in Champaign County.
According to the Urbana Police Department, the Community Engagement & Violence Prevention Office will hold its grand opening Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at 1717 S. Philo Road, Suite 16, in Urbana, part of the Champaign Urbana metro area.
The event begins with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3 p.m., followed by a short program. The office will then remain open until 6 p.m., giving residents an opportunity to tour the space, meet staff and community partners, ask questions and learn about available resources.
Police said the office was created as a welcoming location where people can find resources, build relationships and connect with support. The department emphasized that Thursday& 39;s celebration is open to everyone, not only organizations or agencies.
Community organizations have also been invited to set up resource tables in an outdoor event area and share information about their services. Organizations interested in participating were asked to contact the department ahead of the event.
Food trucks will be on site, with food available for purchase during the open house.
The department said collaboration will be a central focus of the new office, bringing residents, organizations and other partners together to share resources and create opportunities for people to connect with assistance.
The grand opening comes after the department announced the event in an Aug. 18 community release.
Doors open at 3 p.m. Thursday, and the public open house continues through 6 p.m. No admission requirement was announced.
