Vancouver, Canada – A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck late Friday near Sechelt, rattling homes and startling residents across Vancouver.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit at 9:26 p.m. local time, centered 23 km northeast of Sechelt at a depth of 10 km. Thousands reported feeling the shaking, with tremors reaching as far as Vancouver, Surrey, and Nanaimo.
The ShakeMap from the USGS classified the intensity as moderate (VI) in the hardest-hit areas. Reports suggest little to no structural damage, and emergency officials have not issued a tsunami warning.
Seismologists monitor the region closely, as British Columbia sits along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, making earthquakes common. Experts urge residents to prepare emergency kits and review safety plans.
Officials advise anyone who felt the quake to report their experience to earthquake.usgs.gov to help with data collection.
