Lincoln, NE – Frigid Arctic air will sweep across Iowa and Nebraska starting Sunday night, bringing life-threatening wind chills as low as -35°F by Tuesday. Residents should prepare for extreme cold, dangerous travel conditions, and multiple rounds of snow through early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop rapidly Sunday evening, with lows near -1°F. Winds of 10-20 mph will create wind chills as cold as -12°F overnight. Monday’s high will struggle to reach 11°F before plummeting to -10°F by Monday night. Wind chills could reach -30°F by Tuesday morning, with frostbite possible in minutes.
Snow will also impact the region, with a 40% chance of accumulation Sunday night and a stronger system arriving Monday into Tuesday. Several inches of snow are possible, especially south of I-80, where higher totals are expected. Winds will cause blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility.
The bitter cold will persist through midweek, with highs near 3°F on Wednesday and wind chills remaining dangerously low. Officials urge residents to dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and check on vulnerable individuals. Those traveling should carry an emergency kit and monitor road conditions.
