Denver, CO – A powerful winter storm is set to impact Colorado’s high elevations, bringing up to 20 inches of snow and strong winds through Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from midnight Thursday to 8 p.m. Saturday for West Jackson and West Grand Counties, including Rabbit Ears Pass. Snowfall totals are expected to range from 10 to 20 inches, with wind gusts reaching 50 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions.
The heaviest snowfall is expected Friday into early Saturday, with blowing snow reducing visibility. Roads in the Park Range, including Rabbit Ears Pass, will likely be snow-covered and treacherous. Drivers are urged to avoid travel if possible or prepare with emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight.
For updated road conditions, travelers can call 511 or visit www.cotrip.org. Authorities warn that travel could become “very difficult,” with possible whiteout conditions at times.
This storm follows a season of above-average snowfall in Colorado’s mountain regions, further complicating road maintenance and avalanche risks.
