California Weather Alert: Up to 85 Inches of Snow Expected in Sierra Nevada by Friday

Fresno, CA – A major winter storm is set to impact the Sierra Nevada, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected from Wednesday night through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Winter Storm Warningremains in effect from 10 p.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. Friday, with snowfall totals reaching up to 85 inches in higher elevations above 7,000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph, creating dangerous whiteout conditions.

The storm will affect areas including Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park, Grant Grove, and Shaver Lake. Travel could become nearly impossible, especially along mountain passes. The Thursday morning and evening commutes are expected to be hazardous.

Officials warn that strong winds may also cause tree damage and power outages. Travelers are urged to carry emergency supplies such as flashlights, food, and water in case of road closures or delays.

For updated road conditions, residents can call 511 or check with Caltrans. Those in affected areas should avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for severe winter conditions through the end of the week.
