Washington, D.C. – A significant winter storm is set to impact the Washington, D.C., metro area and surrounding regions, bringing heavy snow, sleet, and icy conditions through Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday until 7 a.m. Wednesday for Washington, D.C., central and southern Maryland, and parts of northern and central Virginia. Snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected in the immediate D.C. area, with 4 to 8 inches likely south and west of the city.

Snow is expected to begin late Tuesday morning, intensifying in the afternoon and evening. Some areas could see snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, significantly reducing visibility and making travel dangerous. A wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain may persist into Wednesday morning.

Roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become slick and hazardous. Commuters are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and use caution if driving. Residents should keep extra flashlights, food, and water in vehicles in case of emergency.

For real-time road conditions, call 511 or check state transportation websites.
