Garrett, MD – Western Maryland faces a dangerous ice storm this weekend, with heavy ice accumulation threatening travel and power. The National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning for Garrett and Extreme Western Allegany Counties from 8 a.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will bring up to one inch of snow and sleet before turning to freezing rain. Ice accumulation could reach three-tenths of an inch, with even higher amounts on east-facing slopes.
Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will become extremely slick. Power outages and tree damage are likely due to ice buildup. Travel may be nearly impossible. Residents should prepare for potential power failures and dangerous conditions.
Officials warn against non-essential travel. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle if you must drive. Report downed power lines and avoid contact with them.
Residents should check on vulnerable individuals and ensure heaters are used safely. Generators and grills should never be used indoors.
