New York, NY – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for New York City and parts of New Jersey from Saturday evening through Sunday morning, with up to 5 inches of snow and sleet expected.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin before 1 a.m. Sunday, transitioning into a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain overnight. Icy conditions could make roads, especially bridges and overpasses, treacherous. Wind chills will drop into the 20s, making for a bitterly cold weekend.
Travel may become hazardous late Saturday into early Sunday. Officials advise delaying nonessential trips and preparing emergency kits with blankets, flashlights, and tire chains.
Sunday morning may see lingering sleet before temperatures rise slightly, allowing for partial melting. However, another round of below-freezing temperatures Sunday night could refreeze wet roads, increasing the risk of black ice.
Monday will bring drier conditions, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-30s. Warmer temperatures return Tuesday, offering some relief from the icy weekend.
Drivers should check for updates before heading out and use caution on highways, including I-95 and the New Jersey Turnpike, where ice accumulation is expected.
