A German Shepherd fell through the ice in an Indianapolis retention pond on Monday evening, prompting a swift rescue.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the dog broke through the ice at 11813 Hartland Dr. around 5:36 p.m. Firefighters responded quickly, donning cold-water rescue suits to reach the struggling animal.

Rescue crews carefully navigated the icy waters, securing the dog with a safety rope before pulling him to shore. The dog, visibly cold but unharmed, had been playing with another pup before the accident.

Firefighters wrapped the dog in a blanket to warm him up. Animal Care and Control took custody of the rescued pet to ensure his well-being.

Fire officials urge pet owners to keep animals away from frozen ponds and lakes. Ice conditions remain unpredictable, increasing the risk of accidents.

Residents witnessing animals in distress should call emergency responders rather than attempting a rescue themselves.
