Marquette, MI – A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for Gogebic and Iron counties until 4 a.m. CST Monday, transitioning into an Extreme Cold Warning until noon CST Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, dangerously low wind chills could reach as low as -42°F. These temperatures increase the risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Prolonged exposure may lead to hypothermia. Residents are urged to take precautions, especially during the warning period.
The advisory covers the cities of Ironwood and Iron River, where extreme cold could also result in frozen or ruptured water pipes. Protective measures, such as allowing pipes to drip or insulating outdoor plumbing, are strongly advised.
Officials recommend wearing heavy clothing, gloves, and facemasks for any outdoor activities. The weather service also advises draining in-ground sprinkler systems and wrapping above-ground pipes to prevent freezing.
This event is expected to subside by Tuesday afternoon, but conditions will remain hazardous through the warning period. Residents should monitor local updates for any changes.
